Peter Thompson: Former Liverpool winger passes away aged 76
Former Liverpool winger Peter Thompson has died aged 76.Thompson, who also played for Preston and Bolton, scored 54 goals in 416 appearances for the Reds between 1963-73 and also won two First Division titles under the great Bill Shankly.Thompson in action for Liverpool in 19682

He was also part of the team that won the club’s first FA Cup in 1965 and reach the European Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1966.Shankly once said of Thompson: “He could run forever, but more importantly in football he could run with the ball – probably the hardest thing to do.“He could run every minute of every game, every week, every year better than anybody else.“His work-rate was outstanding, his fitness unequalled, his balance like a ballet dancer. Thompson was capped 16 times by England under Sir Alf Ramsey.Although he was named in Ramsey’s initial 28-man squads for the 1966 and 1970 World Cups, Thompson was cut from the final 22 for both tournaments.Carlisle-born Thompson started his career at Preston where he became a first-team regular at 17 before scoring 20 goals in 121 appearances.He ended his ten-year spell at Anfield in 1973 where he joined Bolton before retiring in 1978.
